MTR is a well known brand in its packaged foods including breakfast mixes, snacks etc. Recently I went to visit my cousins in Bengaluru. I came to know about this chain of authentic south indian restaurants by MTR – Mavalli Tiffin Room. This is ages old and is recommended by every one in Bengaluru to try authentic karnataka style south indian food. It was just perfect place to go for at this weekend and i was pretty much excited about it.
My cousins told me to not expect good ambiance or anything. Its a very simple space serving excellent food. So as I was not expecting anything outstanding, I pretty much liked the ambiance. It was simple, very simple decent dining. But those plants in between gave it beautiful look. For me it was not bad.
As for the service, it is pretty quick and efficient. Staff is polite and they would serve you with smile.
Food at MTR – Mavalli Tiffin Room
Well to try most of the dishes, I found thali was the best option. They served so many dishes in just Rs 250 per person. I mean it was just heaven for a foody like me. Although because there were so many things i didnt take second helping of anything. I wanted to try it all. So lets start with the food served.
Grape Juice
First drink served was fresh Black grape juice in a stainless steel glass. Juice and sweets were served only one portion per person. By the way this juice is my favorite. Some more would have been great. LOL
Suran Palya
It was a dry suran (yam) vegetable preparation with coconut. It had a strong taste of turmeric. It was good, not outstanding.
Coconut Chutney with mint
This chutney was super yummy. Mint added lot of freshness and it was spiced with green chili. Loved it.
Mixed Vegetable Saagu
Saagu is a curry based preparation with coconut, mint and some spices. It tastes yum with puri and rice.
Carrot Lentil Salad
It was freshly made with soaked moong dal and grated carrot. Although it was okok for me.
Mango pickle
Simple regular pickle
Puri
Puri was crisp and tasted perfect with saagu
Vermicelli Kheer
This was yummy, my niece loved it.
Masala Dosa
Next came the dosa. Well it was crisp but thicker. It was served with potato bhaji and coconut chutney as stuffing. It was really good.
Gulabjamun
I didnt liked at all. I must say these sweets are best in North India.
Mirchi pakoda
Simple green chili pakoda without any stuffing. It was crisp but taste was average.
Bisibela bhath with onion raita
Bisibela Bhath is the most relished dish in karnataka. Very flavorful rice with veggies, tamarind, sambhar flavors. Raita was also good which was tempered with mustard seeds. Bhath was little spicey but taste is amazing.
Rice with sambhar and chips
Sambhar was a little thick as it was to be served with rice and it was yummy. Some chips were served which were flavored with cumin. Very nice and crisp.
Curd Rice
Well I got to know that curd rice is to be served at the end of the meal in south india as it aids in digestion. It was super delicious. My stomach was full otherwise i would have taken a second helping. It was so mild and refreshing.
Vanilla ice-cream with fresh fruits
Ice-cream was homemade types, some ice crystals were there. But I like the taste.
Paan
No Indian meal can finish without paan. Right. Although I am not a fan of paan. It was filled with gulkand. So I ate it. It was good.
Overall I would say, this is a perfect south Indian thali. Loved the food, ate till I was full to the neck. If you wanna discover, authentic south indian flavors, MTR is a must go place for you. Although If i will get the chance again, would love to try their idlis and vadas.
